A Member Website a Union Can Rely On

A union’s members-only website had become hard to manage and hard to use. BRIO rebuilt it on WordPress with clear member access, self-service tools, and content staff can update themselves.

The Challenge

A union had worked with BRIO since 2012, when it launched its first website where members could log in to restricted content. Over the years the site became one of the main ways the union shared information, but the technology underneath it reached end of life. Basic features like password resets were cumbersome or stopped working, and the site was a chore for staff to manage.

The union needed to:

  • Bring the website up to current design and usability standards.
  • Move current members smoothly to new online accounts.
  • Give members more useful information online, reducing one-on-one questions.
  • Make the site easy for staff to manage.

The Approach

BRIO started with a full review of the existing site: what worked, what didn’t, and what the site should do that it didn’t. After auditing the content and agreeing on goals, the team took a members-first approach, designing clear paths for members to request an account, log in, and reset their password securely.

The site also had a second audience: potential members. So the design also showcases the union’s projects and people, its history and credibility, and the ways to join.

The Solution

Members-Only Sections: Member pages are organized around the union’s three main offices, matching the structure members already know.

Self-Service for Members: Once logged in, members can check current wage and benefit information, subscribe to an events calendar, pay dues, contact union representatives, request updates to their personal information, explore resources and scholarships, and keep up with other members.

Showcasing Members’ Work: Public project and contractor pages let the union promote its members’ work to the wider community.

Easy to Manage: Built on WordPress with Elementor, the site runs on widely supported, secure technology that staff can update without a developer.

Technical foundation

  • WordPress with Elementor
  • Member accounts with secure registration, login, and password reset
  • Members-only content organized by office
  • Online dues payment and subscribable events calendar
  • Fully responsive design for any device

The Impact

  • Members moved to reliable new accounts with self-service access.
  • A larger content library gives members and prospects more and better information.
  • Member usage is up.
  • Staff manage the site themselves.

BRIO brought our vision to life to make access to information for our members straightforward and effortless. The process was both vigorous and gratifying when we were able to see our members easily access the information they needed.
